The current EIB is designed to incorporate two 16 channels linear silicon probes, optimized for the CA1/CA3 region of the mouse hippocampus. However, other 16 channels bendable-shaft silicon probes, with unique geometrical organization of the contacts, are readily available. Denser, nonlinear organizations can be used to infer the sub-layer origin of the recorded units, e.g. deep vs superficial hippocampal pyramidal cells (E16R+R-20-S1-L20 NT; Mizuseki et al. (2011)), or shaft with electrodes organized in more spaced configuration that can sample LFP across multiple areas (E16+R-250-S1-L8 NT).
